On the evidence of this highlights disc alone, no expense was spared during Barbra Streisand's 1994 nation-wide tour: full-dress Broadway set, large-scale orchestra lushly arranged and conducted by Marvin Hamlisch, a giant screen projection of Marlon Brando singing(!) a duet with Barbra from GUYS AND DOLLS. Which makes it all the more remarkable that Streisand is able to establish such a comfortable, intimate rapport with this adoring hometown (N.Y.C.) crowd the moment she swoops in singing "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from SUNSET BOULEVARD.
After nearly 35 years in show business, Streisand's voice remains a lovely instrument. So along with the autobiographical song-intros and liberal politics, we are also treated to superbly sung renditions of "People," "Evergreen" and "The Way We Were" as well as "Can't Help Lovin That Man" and a stirring "The Man That Got Away" dedicated to Judy Garland. Credit also arranger Hamlisch for his superior scoring--check out the dark, rich chords opening "Will He Like Me?"--as well as his full-blooded, always sympathetic piano accompaniment.
